Everyone argues about price per meal. That's the wrong number. The number that tells you anything is price per gram of protein — because a RM15 box with 40g of protein is a better deal than a RM10 box with 15g, and you can't tell which is which just by looking at the price tag.
Here's the actual math for the options a KL gym-goer has on a normal Tuesday.
Cooking it yourself
Raw chicken breast runs roughly RM12–15 a kilo at a wet market or supermarket in the Klang Valley. A kilo gives you around 220g of protein once cooked. That's about RM0.06 a gram — the cheapest option on this list, by a wide margin.
The catch isn't the money. It's the marinating, the pan, the washing up, and doing it again tomorrow. Cheapest per gram, most expensive in time.
A protein shake
A standard tub (about 30 servings, ~RM150–180 depending on brand) gives roughly 24–25g of protein per scoop. That's about RM0.20–0.25 a gram — genuinely cheap, and faster than cooking.
The catch: it's a shake, not a meal. Nobody feels fed on protein powder alone, and it solves zero of your rice-and-vegetables problem.
Mamak or kopitiam chicken
A plate with a decent piece of chicken runs roughly RM8–12, and you're getting somewhere around 20–25g of protein if you're lucky and the piece is meaty. That's roughly RM0.35–0.50 a gram — and the "roughly" is the problem. Nobody weighs a mamak chicken thigh. You're guessing every time.
A HiPro box
Checked against the live store the morning this went out: 180g of chicken breast, 37–40g of protein depending on flavour (Pedas 39g, Cajun 37g, Italian Herbs 40g, Rebus 38g), for RM13.32–15.00 a meal depending on pack size. That puts a HiPro box at roughly RM0.33–0.41 a gram — more than cooking it yourself, at or below what you'd pay a mamak, and the one number here that's actually printed on the box instead of estimated by us for this article.
The honest verdict
If you have the time and don't mind the dishes, cooking your own chicken breast is still the cheapest way to hit a protein number. If you just need a fast top-up between meals, a shake is cheap and quick but isn't food. If you're buying lunch out, you're paying mamak prices for a number nobody actually measured.
A HiPro box sits in the middle: not the cheapest gram, but the only one on this list where the gram count isn't a guess — freezer to microwave in under five minutes, four flavours (Pedas, Cajun, Italian Herbs, Rebus), same exact protein number every time.
The bigger the pack, the cheaper the gram:

- 5-pack: RM74.00 — RM14.80 per meal
- 10-pack: RM140.60 — RM14.06 per meal
- 20-pack: RM266.40 — RM13.32 per meal, the cheapest gram we do
